The series initially featured natural gold nuggets discovered in Australia, but in 1989 changed direction and started featuring kangaroos instead. It was eventually renamed the Australian Kangaroo. This popular Gold Kangaroo series releases a new design each year reflecting the beloved kangaroo, a native of Australia. This issue has a strict mintage cap of 300,000 coins, providing further collectability on top of the unique design. Uniquely, in Australia there are two mints authorised to strike legal tender: the Royal Australian Mint (which also makes the country's circulating coinage) and the Perth Mint which only makes collector and bullion coins, as well as other bullion products.

• Obverse (Front) : The obverse of the coin shows the crowned bust of Queen Elizabeth II, facing right (her effigy known as the "Third Portrait"). The Queen is wearing the royal diadem which she used to wear on her way to and from the State Opening of Parliament, a pearl necklace and earrings. Incuse in tiny letters on the neck truncation, the designer's initials RDM (for Raphael David Maklouf). Around, the monarch's legend and the face value: "ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA 100 DOLLARS".
• Reverse (Back) : Features a realistic representation of a Grey Kangaroo, standing, facing right and looking back, with a starburst background (stylised rays of sunlight not quite reaching the centre). Below it, the inscription GREY KANGAROO. Around above, the name of the series and the precious metal content: "THE AUSTRALIAN NUGGET 1 OZ". Around below, the date of issue · 1990. The P mint mark of the Perth Mint is above the date.
