His Majesty is depicted uncrowned, facing to the left, with the designer's initials 'MJ' (Martin Jennings) placed in small letters below the truncation of the neck. An inscription encircles the obverse portrait, reading as follows: "CHARLES III · D · G · REX · F · D · 100 POUNDS". Translated from Latin, the legend means: Charles the Third, by the Grace of God, King, Defender of the Faith. It has a textured background ("guilloche" geometric pattern).
