The British Double Sovereign was first introduced during Henry VII's reign (1485) as a rare, heavy presentation coin. The first official, circulated Double Sovereign appeared in 1823 for George IV, though a 1820 pattern coin had been struck for George III. Production was limited in the 19th and early 20th centuries, but they saw a resurgence after 1980 and are now available as collectible proof coins and popular bullion investments
